UW-M/WC students
sponsor hunger banquet
MARSHFIELD –
A Hunger Banquet benefiting Oxfam America will be held 12:20
-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Commons at the
UW-Marshfield/Wood County campus.
The event is
open to the public. Tickets are $2 and are available from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. at the UW-Marshfield/Wood County Business Office. The
event is sponsored by the Student Activities Committee.
“The
committee felt that this is a great way to promote awareness of
world hunger and poverty,” said Courtney Pease, freshman, and
committee spokesperson. “It ties in well with this year’s campus
theme ‘Affluenza’ which deals with how Americans place too much
emphasis on material goods while others go without food.”
The menu for
the banquet will not be the same for everyone, Pease said.
There are several different types of tickets. The type of
ticket determines what social class the ticket holder
represents.
“The ticket
holder’s social class determines what kind of meal they will be
served,” Pease said. “The meal will reflect the real-life
experiences of people who are part of that social class.”
Dr. Jeff
Kleiman, history professor, will be emceeing the event. The
meals will be served by faculty and members of the committee.
All proceeds
from the event will go to Oxfam America, a non-profit
organization that works to end global poverty through saving
lives, strengthening communities, and campaigning for change.
Oxfam America is an affiliate of Oxfam International,
a confederation of 12 organizations
working together with more than 3,000 partners in more than 100
countries to find lasting solutions to poverty, suffering and
injustice. |
