Dr.
David De Lyser, assistant professor of music,
UW-Marshfield/Wood County, is continuing to recruit
musicians to perform in the university/community musical
groups.
Like the UW-Marshfield/Wood County
Symphony, the campus’ Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble are
open to students and community musicians. Registration is
not required. Currently, the Symphonic Band has about 45
members who rehearse at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The Jazz
Ensemble has about 12 members who rehearse at 7 p.m. on
Mondays.
“We’re always looking for more
musicians,” De Lyser said. “Though both musical groups are
university-affiliated, we are really just a group of
musicians who love to play.”
The Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble
will be performing under De Lyser at the Holiday Concert at
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. The concert also features the
UW-Marshfield/Wood County Concert Choir under the direction
of Kathy Pearson.
“This marks my first concert here at
The Wood,” De Lyser said. “The program features a wide
variety of music that I hope will appeal to people of all
ages.”
De Lyser earned his doctorate of arts
degree from the University of Northern Colorado, with a
primary emphasis in music theory and composition, and a
secondary emphasis in conducting. Prior to coming to the UW
Marshfield/Wood County, he conducted various band, orchestra
and choral ensembles in Colorado and in the Portland, Ore.,
area. He also taught at the University of Northern
Colorado, Portland Community College and the University of
Portland, where he received a Master of Arts degree in
music.
De Lyser was the 2005 winner of the
Mercury Ensemble Composition Award and also had a work
performed at the 2005 College Music Society Regional
Conference in Denver. In addition, he has had compositions
performed and premiered by the University of Portland
Orchestra, the Fort Collins High School Orchestra and the
Rocky Mountain Chorale. De Lyser is a trumpet player and
vocalist, and has performed in professional choirs in the
Portland area, as well as pit orchestras for various
regional and dinner theatres in the Chicago and Twin Cities’
area.
“It is clear that the music department
at The Wood has enjoyed tremendous support of the Marshfield
area community,” De Lyser said. “A number of local
musicians and educators have worked hard to insure the
continued success of the program. I’ve got a wonderful
foundation to build on. My hope is to grow the program,
making The Wood a destination for students who want to study
and perform music.”
De Lyser will also be leading a brass
quintet on a UW-Marshfield/Wood County float in the Nov. 17
Main Street Marshfield Holiday Parade.
“I’m looking forward to making the
music department an even more integral part of the
community,” he said.
