UW-Marshfield/Wood County Bookstore gives textbook money back to student

MARSHFIELD –  Jake Hahn got a surprise on Friday – a full refund on the cost of his fall semester textbooks.

“This will help out quite a bit with college expenses,” said Hahn, Pittsville, a student at UW-Marshfield/Wood County, studying business management.  “I was surprised at how expensive textbooks are.”

UW-Marshfield/Wood County Bookstore employees decided to raffle off a semester’s worth of textbooks as a means of helping students combat rising tuition costs, said Dan McCollum, assistant campus dean of administrative services.

“We’re doing whatever we can to help make ‘The Wood’ affordable for everyone,” he said. “We’re committed to the Wisconsin Idea of bringing higher education to everyone’s doorstep.  The cost of textbooks – even used textbooks – can pose a serious financial hardship to some students.  We wanted to do everything we could to help offset that.”

Hahn said the extra cash he received as a result of the refund will come in handy. Dean Andy Keogh drew Hahn’s receipt – totaling $461.94 – early Friday afternoon.

“This is great,” said Hahn.  “I’m not sure what I’ll use the money for.  It will certainly help out with gas, though, since I commute from Pittsville.”

Chris Cherney, bookstore manager, said students were very enthusiastic about the drawing when they were buying textbooks, Marauder clothing and other school supplies.

“It was a nice opportunity for us to give back to students,” she said. “This is something we’d like to do every semester.”

McCollum said the money refunded to Hahn was taken from bookstore profits.  The campus bookstore operates on a cost-recovery basis with no tax-dollar support. The refund of textbook costs is one way the Bookstore can return student funds to students.  The bookstore also supports campus projects, including technology and furniture upgrades that benefit students.

The UW-Marshfield/Wood County Bookstore is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.  The store is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
