UW-M/WC to honors outstanding alumni at banquet, meeting

MARSHFIELD – The UW-Marshfield/Wood County Alumni Association will be honoring Jack Neumann with the Outstanding Alumni Award during the Alumni and Friends Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 22, in the campus Commons.

The event will reunite former instructors, staff and students of “The Center,” affectionately known today as “The Wood.”  The event begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour (cash bar), followed by the banquet at 6 p.m.  During the banquet, Neumann, Marshfield, will be honored.  Social time will continue following the formal award presentation, program and a brief business meeting. Tickets are $25 per person.

Neumann was chosen for the award based on his dedication to the campus while he was a student and, later, a long-time employee.  He began his time at UW-M/WC following his discharge from military service in 1969.  While on campus, he served as vice president of the Student Self-Governing Association, and in 1970 he received the William D. Pors Outstanding Student Award.  In 1972, he began working as the audio-visual specialist on campus – photographing virtually all of the campus’ history until his retirement in 2000.

“Jack’s commitment to the UW-M/WC campus is outstanding,” said Don “Schnitz” Schnitzler, president of the alumni association.  “Even today, Jack can be found on campus, helping out with whatever needs to be done.  He’s very deserving of this award.”

“I spent so much of my life there - I find I just have to go back,” Neumann said recently. “I never worked anywhere where it was so easy to find something to do. The campus has been a constant in my life; it’s nice going back.”

In 2004, Neumann was awarded emeritus status by the UW-Colleges.

“Emeritus status is a reflection of a long-term contribution to the campus,” said Dr. Andy Keogh, dean and chief campus officer. “Jack was an excellent selection for emeritus status.  He did his job, year after year, and then went out and did more than his job, year after year. Jack was someone his peers went to when they needed help.  To name him as outstanding alumni seems more than appropriate.”
