MARSHFIELD – More than $70,000 in
scholarships – including several new scholarships - is available
to UW-Marshfield/Wood County students and prospective students
who apply.
“I’m really impressed with the generosity
of this community and its commitment to higher education,” said
Kathleen Adamson, coordinator for The University Foundation of
UW-Marshfield/Wood County. “Several area families have
instituted scholarships this year in memory of their family
members. That’s truly a great way to remember a loved one.”
Jane Kennedy and Bruce Krawisz established
the Dr. Robert H. Kennedy Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000
scholarship celebrates the life of Kennedy’s brother, an
oculoplastic surgeon who earned medical, doctorate and masters
degrees.
“(My brother) valued education as you can
see by his many degrees,” Kennedy said. “…I think he would be
pleased that someone else is getting a boost in life in his
name. My husband and I grew up in families that did not have
the means to pay for our college education. We went to college
and medical school largely on scholarships. We are very
grateful to have been given the wonderful educational
opportunities we had. We are pleased to pass that chance to
others.”
Family and friends of Janet Gross, who
served as a nurse in Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids for more
than 40 years, established a $1,000 scholarship in her name.
The Janet Gross Memorial Scholarship is open to new freshmen and
continuing students who are nursing majors.
“My mother truly loved nursing, and she
believed strongly in higher education,” said Melissa Lake,
Janet’s daughter. “Her sisters and I agreed that this
scholarship is a truly wonderful way to celebrate her life.”
The
University Foundation of UW-Marshfield/Wood County
offers merit, non-merit and need-based scholarships to new,
continuing and transfer students who have demonstrated qualities
of excellence in academics and community service or who have
financial need. To qualify for a merit scholarship, students
must meet two of the following requirements:
● Graduate in upper 30 percent of high
school class.
● Minimum ACT score of 21 or comparable SAT
score.
● Graduate with a GPA of at least 3.0.
Even with the tuition hikes throughout the
UW System, UW-M/WC is about $900 less per year than any other
form of public university education. The University Foundation
is committed to keeping higher education affordable through its
Dean’s Scholarships, which are available to students with
financial need and/or who meet enrollment criteria.
