Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company performs at
UW-M/WC

MARSHFIELD – “A Dragon’s Tale,” presented by the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Helen Laird Theatre in the Helen Connor Laird Fine Arts Building at UW-Marshfield/Wood County, 2000 West 5th St., Marshfield.

The performance is sponsored by the Laird Endowment Fund for the Arts. The event kicks off the Marshfield Area Cultural Fair which will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, on the campus.

“A Dragon’s Tale” features traditional Chinese dances, including “The Lion Dance,” which one of the most popular dances performed in the Chinese New Year Celebration.  The dance is said to have originated in the Tang Dynasty more than 3,000 years ago. Authentic costumes are highly symbolic.  For example, the long sleeve on the dancer’s costume worn for “Passage to The Silk River,’ is called the water sleeve, and is used to express the motion of the water as well as the emotion of the dancer.

Since its inception in 1988, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has toured extensively to major performing arts centers both nationally and internationally.  The company has also developed Arts in Education residency programs for many school districts to bring culture and arts into educational settings. Its residency program for Chinese American heritage has been selected by the Chinese Language Teachers Association for Primary and Secondary Schools as a new model for collaborative language and arts education in primary and secondary schools.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Campus Box Office from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and one hour prior to performances. To order tickets, call (715) 389-6534 any time, and leave a message. MasterCard, VISA and Discover cards are accepted.

The Spotlight Series brings a dazzling variety of professional entertainers from around the world to the UW-Marshfield/Wood County campus.  The Lascivious Biddies, an all-female pop quartet, which blends jazz, pop and cabaret, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the Helen Laird Theatre.  Tickets are $16.  For more information on the Spotlight Series, contact Jeannie Pitsch, at UW-Marshfield/Wood County, at 715-389-6520.
