The
following UW-Marshfield/Wood County faculty and staff have
recently been awarded grants, presented papers, received awards
and/or attended conferences.

David De Lyser, assistant professor of music, received the
Arthur M. Kaplan Faculty and Staff Performance Award for
2007-08. He was nominated for the award by Dean Andrew Keogh
for his outstanding contribution to the overall campus
environment. De Lyser started teaching at the campus in 2005.
He conducts the symphonic band and the concert choir.
De
Lyser also performed on trumpet with the Wisconsin College and
University Faculty Brass Ensemble for the Wisconsin Music
Educators Association State Music Conference in October in
Madison.

Marcie Manthe, program assistant advanced confidential, was
named the 2007 recipient of the annual Classified Employee
award, based on her outstanding contribution to the overall
campus environment. Manthe has been with the campus since 1989.
●
Dr. Kavita Bhatia, associate professor of mathematics,
served as a reviewer for the Wisconsin Elementary and Secondary
Education Act Improving Teacher Quality Program.

Steven Decker, assistant professor of theatre and
communication arts, attended the UW-Colleges First Year Engaged
Readers Conference in September in Fond du Lac

Dr.
Mathew J. Bartkowiak’s
work on Arthur Lee, front-man for the band Love, was published
in the “African American National Biography” through Oxford
University Press.
Bartkowiak was also selected as a new reviewer for “Choice:
Current Reviews for Academic Libraries.” He was named the area
chair of the “Music and Effects in Film” panels for the upcoming
Film & History Conference in Chicago.

Kathleen Farrell, assistant professor of sociology; Julie
Horton, Americorps/VISTA representative; Jan Cain,
math lecturer; Dr. Jinbo Lu, assistant professor of
mathematics; Jeff Meece, assistant campus dean for
Student Services; and Kami Weis, Student Services
coordinator, attended the Great Northwoods Service-Learning
Conference in October in Wausau.
Farrell also had a paper entitled “Social Change and Television:
Education, Politics, and Gay TV” accepted at the Midwest
Sociological Society’s 2008 Conference. She will present the
paper in St. Louis in March.
Horton also attended the Wisconsin Campus Compact Conference:
“Service and Engagement for Students, Campuses, and Communities”
in November in Madison.

Ann Applegate, music lecturer, will be performing on the
Wisconsin Public Radio series Sunday Afternoon Live from the
Chazen on 12:30 p.m. Jan. 20.
●
Laurie Petri, academic librarian, attended the Multicultural
Awareness Workshop in Madison. She is currently enrolled in the
online course “Working with Difficult Patrons Effectively”
through the University of North Texas.
