MARSHFIELD – Area residents will be able to hit the beach at a
free campus community Beach Party from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, August
7, at UW-Marshfield/Wood County, 2000 W. 5th St.
“No
matter what your age or education level, it’s not too late to
register for fall classes,” said Jeff Meece, assistant campus
dean for Student Services. “A beach party is a fun way to
introduce people to the college experience, while they learn
about the cost savings and personal attention that
UW-Marshfield/Wood County can offer.
In
addition to free food and refreshments, the $35 application fee
will be waived for students who apply for admission during the
event, Meece said.
“We’ll have advisers, faculty, students and staff available to
answer questions one on one, in addition to formal
presentations,” he said. “It’s going to be a very relaxed,
informal – yet informative – event.”
UW-Marshfield/Wood County offers substantially lower tuition
than state four-year institutions. Based on 2006-07 rates, a
year’s tuition at UW-M/WC is 33 percent less than UW-Madison or
UW-Milwaukee and 17 percent less than UW-Stevens Point.
“Plus, students save anywhere from $4,200 to $6,100 on room and
board per year if they continue to live at home,” Meece said.
In
addition, UW-M/WC offers small class sizes, which provides
students with personal attention from faculty.
“Instead of being one of 500 students in a huge lecture hall,
our students are, on average, one of 23 students,” Meece said.
“That can make a huge difference in students’ success rates.”
Research shows that 70% of students who start at
UW-M/WC graduate and earn a degree. This compares to 67% of
students who start at a UW four-year and 49% of those who start
at a Wisconsin Technical College.
