Maus opens in Gallery 450

MARSHFIELD – “Maus: A Survivor’s Tale” a traveling art exhibit featuring the work of students at the UW-Stout Department of Art and Design, will open Monday, Oct. 1, in Gallery 450 in the Helen Connor Laird Fine Arts Building at the UW-Marshfield/Wood County.

The exhibit, a collaborative effort by Professor Nancy Blum-Cumming’s freshmen design students at UW-Stout Department of Art and Design, is based on Art Spiegelman's book “Maus.” the only graphic novel ever to win the Pulitzer Prize.  The book tells the true story of Spiegelman's father, Vladek, and his life in Poland before and during World War II, and then as a survivor of the Holocaust in New York. Spiegelman’s “Maus” is heralded as one of the most powerful depictions of life and death in Auschwitz and of the long-terms effects of the Holocaust on those who survived it.

"The exhibit is made up of 66 hand-drawn, animated images that show 50 miles of space, and morph tone image into the next to create a timeline of the story,” said Julie Dierauer, manager of Gallery 450.  “The drawings depict enormous expression based Spiegelman’s book.  This is a show of interpretation.  Students had to work together and communicate.”

Dr. Jeff Kleiman, UW-M/WC professor of history, will speak with students and public on the historical importance of “Maus: A Survivor’s Tale” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Gallery 450. He will address the literary and artistic expressions of this story that is a form of Holocaust documentation.

“Maus: A Survivor’s Tale” is the second exhibit in the “In and Out of Traditional Art” series.  Other exhibits are as follows:
