Choosing a
college requires research
How
do I make the right choice for college? This may be a question
many of you are asking. You could be a sophomore, junior or
senior in high school. Or you have a high school student at
home whom you are trying to help through the process. Regardless
of your situation, the process can be daunting.
Let’s try and make this search process less stressful and maybe
even fun. When choosing a school, the first step that every
family should take is to make a list of your top three schools,
give them a call and make plans to visit them. This is an
important part of the selection process because it allows
students to experience the environment, see the school, learn
about the town and see it feels right. Campus visits also
include information on admissions, financial aid,
extra-curricular activities, faculty and teaching. If you or
your future student are interested in a particular sport or are
involved in theatre or music, incorporate a game, a concert or
other event into your visit. This provides the student (and
family) insight into the quality offerings that the campus
provides.
Yes, this will take some time. But remember that you are about
to make a significant financial investment into this new
venture. You are also making an investment in yourself and/or
the future of your child. With any new venture, you want to make
sure that you do your research. Research ensures not only peace
of mind but you and/or your student with the right information
and tools to guarantee academic success.
This is where UW-Marshfield/Wood County can help you out. We are
hosting a Fall Family Night program on at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct
17. This is a program that affords students and their parents
an opportunity to visit our beautiful campus and to determine
whether the UW-MW/C is a good fit for the first two years of
their college education.
“Wednesdays @ The Wood” provides another opportunity to
experience what we have to offer. Join our student ambassadors
and other college-bound high school students for
coffee/cappuccino and conversation in our newly remodeled
library. We’re hosting these “college coffeehouses” on the
first Wednesday of most months to coincide with Early Release
days. This is a great opportunity for perspective students
and their families to enjoy a coffee house environment while
learning about UW-M/WC.
For
more information or to sign up for these events please call
715-389-6530. We look forward to seeing you soon.
