A degree still possible, despite financial aid shortages

MARSHFIELD - Like other college-bound students across the nation, Central Wisconsin students may find their financial aid awards are falling short of actual tuition and fee costs.

“Students receive notification of their financial aid awards on or around July 1,” said Jeffrey Meece, assistant campus dean for Student Services. “That’s when reality hits and many students realize that college may be more of a financial struggle than they anticipated.”

UW-Marshfield/Wood County, one of 13 two-year campuses in the University of Wisconsin System, offers a more affordable opportunity.  Two semesters’ tuition and fees at UW-Marshfield/Wood County are less than $4,000.  By living at home, students can also realize additional savings on room and board.  This compares to:

UW-Eau Claire:  $5,502 plus $4,642 (room and board) equals $10,144.

UW-Green Bay:  $5,176 plus $4,200 (room and board) equals $9,376/year.

UW-Madison:  $6,726 plus $6,180 (room and board) equals $12,906/year.

UW-Milwaukee:  $6,636 plus $4988 (room and board) equals $11,624/year.

UW-Stevens Point:  $5,459 plus $4,526 (room and board) equals $9,985/year.

● UW-Stout:  $6,963 plus $4,884 (room and board) equals $11,847/year.

“There’s no question that tuition is on the rise,” Meece said. “But by living at home and attending UW-Marshfield/Wood County for two years, students can start, debt free, at a four-year university with junior status.  And all credits will transfer, guaranteed!  Or, students can earn a bachelor’s degree here on our campus through our collaborative degree programs.”

In addition to the financial benefits, UW-Marshfield/Wood County offers small class sizes, day and evening courses and highly qualified faculty.  Research shows that 70% of students who start at UW-Marshfield/ Wood County  graduate and earn a degree.  This compares to 67% of students who start at a UW four-year and 49% of those who start at a Wisconsin Technical College.

“UW-Marshfield/Wood County has higher retention rates as well,” Meece said. “About 80% of students who start with us  return for a second year. Only 71 percent of those who start at a four year and 66 percent of those who start at a technical college return for their sophomore year.”

Applications the Fall 2006 semester are still being accepted.  To apply, go to www.marshfield.uwc.edu or call Student Services at 715-389-6530.
